Customized forms not opening from Teams

When using a List tab in Teams, custom forms do not open from the new UI

When displaying a SharePoint custom list in a tab in Microsoft Teams, you should be able to open a form customized with Lightning Forms from that list just as you can in SharePoint, and the form will open within Teams.

Problem statement

After Microsoft's rollout of their new modern List UI, this is no longer working. Clicking on an item from a list displayed on a Teams tab to open its customized Display Form will open a browser and open the form in SharePoint. Clicking +Add New to open the customized New Form will do nothing at all. This is true whether the list has been added to the Teams tab via the Lists app or via the SharePoint app.

We suspect this is related to the fact that in the new SharePoint list UI, built-in forms now open in a dialog rather than in a side panel. We were made aware of this issue in early December 2024. Please see this GitHub issue

Potential workarounds

One workaround is to change the Teams tab to a Website, that links to your list in SharePoint, where the customized forms work as expected. However, this takes the user completely out of Teams, which might not be desirable.

Another workaround until Microsoft fixes this issue is the following:

  • Create a new SharePoint modern page on the SharePoint site that contains your list. Add a List web part to that page, pointing to the relevant list.
  • In Teams, add a new tab using the SharePoint app, and select to display a Page. Select the page you just created and published.

This will display the list on a SharePoint page on a Teams tab, and the customized forms will work on that tab just as they would in SharePoint.
