Migrate an InfoPath form to a Power App

Learn how to seamlessly transfer your existing InfoPath forms to Power Apps for a more modern user experience.

As InfoPath approaches its end of life in July 2026, organizations must transition to modern form technologies like Microsoft Power Apps, Lightning Forms, Nintex, or Skybow. This guide walks you through migrating an InfoPath form - along with its data - to a Power App based on a SharePoint List, using Lightning Tools Form Migrator.

Prerequisites

  • InfoPath form design file (.XSN) or a published InfoPath form library in SharePoint
  • Access to Microsoft Power Apps
  • Lightning Tools Form Migrator installed with either a trial or full license key
  • Permission to create SharePoint lists and authenticate connections

Step-by-Step Migration Process

You can also go through this walkthrough in our video.

Identify the InfoPath Form to Migrate

Open your existing InfoPath form (for example, an “Employment Application”) and note the following:

  • Fields: text, choice, numbers, etc.
  • Repeating sections: e.g., Education, References
  • Logos and layout elements

Load the Form into Lightning Tools Form Migrator

Create a new Workspace (Container) in the Migrator.

Choose how to import:

  • From SharePoint: Point to a SharePoint site containing published form libraries (on-prem or online).
  • From File System: Browse to your .XSN file.

Analyze the Form

Click Analyze to assess:

  • Complexity Score: Number of rules, calculations, etc.
  • Portability Score: Likelihood of successful migration

✅ Even if the score is not 100%, most of the form will still migrate with minimal manual touch-up.

Preview the Form (Uniform Previewer)

Click Read and then Preview to open the form in the Uniform Previewer.

Review the following:

  • Layout and formatting
  • Repeating sections
  • Fields and branding

Choose a Destination Platform

Click Write and choose where to deploy the form:

  • Power Apps
  • Lightning Forms
  • Nintex, Skybow, etc.

We’ll proceed with Power Apps for this walkthrough.

Set Up SharePoint List Connections

Use an existing SharePoint site or connect to a new one.
Authenticate using Microsoft 365 credentials.
Form Migrator will:

  • Create a primary SharePoint list for the main form
  • Create sub-lists for each repeating section

You can choose whether to overwrite existing lists or update them.

Click Go.

Open Power Apps and Import the Form

Download and import the .msapp file into Power Apps.

Connect to the SharePoint data source:

  • Go to the Data pane.
  • Add a new SharePoint connector.
  • Paste your SharePoint site URL.
  • Select the lists that were created during migration.

Any red errors will disappear after connecting to the data source.

Test and Finalize the Form

Run the Power App to verify:

  • Form layout matches the original
  • Choice fields and repeating sections work
  • Attachments upload correctly
  • Submit a test form and validate data in the SharePoint list

Migrating Data from InfoPath Form Libraries

Want to bring your existing form submissions (XML) too? Here's how…

Load Form Library with Data

Point to the source form library (e.g., “Contacts”) in SharePoint.
Use the Read and Preview features to confirm content.

Choose Target Destination

Pick the target SharePoint list (already created by migration).

Click Convert. Review the fields.

Click Start Migration.
Data rows are parsed and migrated into the new SharePoint list structure.

Outcome

Your form is now available in Power Apps.
Data is migrated and viewable/editable in modern SharePoint lists.
You're compliant with InfoPath's retirement and ready for long-term support.
