Manual license activation of SPFx tools

How to activate your Lightning Tools license if you have no internet access

Introduction

Lightning Tools' modern SharePoint Framework (SPFx) apps (except for DeliverPoint) are designed for SharePoint Online, but they can also be used in SharePoint 2019 or SE server farms on modern pages. In some organizations, the SharePoint servers do not have an internet connection, which is normally required to activate and check Lightning Tools licenses. In this scenario, we can activate your license manually.

If you are using one of our Farm Solutions (WSP), and your servers have no internet access, there is a different procedure for manual activation. Please see Activating your DeliverPoint License - DeliverPoint 2013 and Add-In - 1 for an example; it's similar for each of the WSP tools.

Send us the relevant information

First, enter your license key (provided by your Account Manager after you purchased), and the other information (your organization name, and the name and email of your SharePoint Admin or IT department) in the license panel of the app. Then click the Send Activation Email button.

Send the data generated by that button to help@lightningtools.com as a text file. The generated text will include your Farm ID. If this is difficult because your server does not have access to email, you can send us the following information in an email:

  • The license key you are trying to activate on this farm
  • Your Farm ID. You should see this in the generated text as the UserIdentity, but you can also obtain the Farm ID using PowerShell: Get-SPFarm | select id
  •  Your organization name, username, and email you wish to have saved in the panel.

In either case, sending the information to help@lightningtools.com will open a support ticket with Lightning Tools, and a member of our Customer Success team will respond to the ticket.

Enter the activated license information

We will use the information you have sent, to manually activate the license in our system. This process produces a text file with a .lic extension; it contains the information you sent, as well as the date, expiration, and a digital signature that will only work for your key and Farm ID. We will send you this license text, which a site owner will then need to copy/paste into the License Information box in the app's license panel, and click Save License. This needs to be done by a site owner because the information will be saved in a hidden list in the root site of the current site collection.

Note that when using an SPFx app in SharePoint server environments, the license must be activated once per site collection. So in this scenario with no internet, you will need to copy/paste the same manual activation text once in each site collection where you wish to use the app, to perform the activation.
